Luxury Holiday Cottages in Carmarthenshire, West Wales

Boutique Stays for Two in Historic Cottages Near the Brecon Beacons

Private hot tub or outdoor bath cabin • Secluded countryside setting • Designed exclusively for couples

Black Mountain Escapes offers two luxury self-catering holiday cottages for couples in Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. Each cottage is designed as a private romantic retreat, with features including hot tubs or outdoor bath cabins, panoramic countryside views, and interiors that bring together heritage, comfort and seclusion.

A Romantic Escape, Set in History

Set within the ruins of a 10th-century motte-and-bailey site, Black Mountain Escapes is home to just two cottages, thoughtfully positioned for privacy so each feels entirely your own. Both have been carefully restored to retain their original character, offering a stay that feels relaxed, comfortable, and quietly special.

Exposed beams, stone floors and timeworn details run throughout, sitting alongside calm, inviting interiors with antiques and natural materials. There’s a sense here of stepping into a different pace of life, where objects have a story of their own, and nothing feels overly new or hurried. The setting feels historic, yet easy to settle into from the moment you arrive.

Mornings begin slowly, with birdsong and coffee taken without rush. Days unfold in the countryside, whether walking with your dog or spending time with your horse at the on-site facilities, before returning as evening draws in. Then, after a day of exploring, sink into your own warm bath or hot tub under open skies, as the last of the light fades and the stars appear.

Two Cottages, Two Distinct Stays

Black Mountain Escapes is home to two one-bedroom cottages, Gablebach and Y Golchdy, each offering a romantic escape for two.

Both cottages have been lovingly restored, with care taken to preserve their character and sense of history.

Original features run throughout, from exposed beams and stone floors to thick walls that hold a sense of the building’s past. Details reflect the heritage of the estate and its surroundings. Antique furniture and vintage pieces have been carefully chosen to sit comfortably within the space, creating interiors that feel layered, lived-in and true to their setting.

Small details add to the sense of place. Old magazines and objects from another era are woven into the cottages, as though they’ve always been there. It’s less about recreating the past and more about stepping into it, if only for a while.

Each cottage has its own layout and sense of space, with well-equipped kitchens, relaxed living areas and thoughtful touches throughout. Gablebach features an outdoor bath, while Y Golchdy offers a private hot tub. Both are positioned to take in the views across the surrounding landscape.

For those who prefer not to leave anyone behind, dogs are welcome. Guests travelling with horses can also make use of on-site stabling and pasture, a rare feature for a stay of this kind.

Only two cottages, usually booked weeks in advance

About Us

Black Mountain Escapes is run by Ruth and Eirian, a Welsh couple with strong ties to the area. Eirian was born in nearby Llangadog, while Ruth is originally from Cardiff.

They have cared for the smallholding since 2018, gradually restoring its buildings with a focus on preserving their history while creating places that feel welcoming and easy to stay in.

Y Golchdy, once used for washing weekly laundry, was later restored for Ruth’s father as a place to stay and enjoy the surrounding countryside. Gablebach began life as a stable and hayloft, with the loft converted in the late 1980s into a groom’s flat.

The land itself has a much longer story. The cottages sit within the remains of Castell Meurig, a Norman motte-and-bailey castle now softened into the landscape, but once a strategic stronghold overlooking the Tywi Valley. From here, movement along the valley could be watched and controlled, and the site became part of a shifting history of conflict between Norman forces and Welsh princes.

Destroyed in the early 13th century and never rebuilt, the castle remains today as a quiet presence in the landscape. Less a ruin, more a subtle imprint of what once stood here.

Today, it is a place Ruth and Eirian are proud to share, welcoming guests to experience the beauty, history and slower pace of the Tywi Valley.
