The enclosed courtyard below the motte, containing workshops, stores, livestock and accommodation for the castle’s occupants.

The primary route into the castle, protected by timber palisades and defensive earthworks.
Afon Sawdde
The river below the castle. Control of this crossing helped make the site strategically important.
Valley Crossing
Travellers moving through the valley would have passed within sight of the castle, making it an ideal location for controlling movement and trade.
A Hidden Castle

Few holiday cottages in Wales can claim to sit within the earthworks of a medieval castle. At Black Mountain Escapes, guests have the rare opportunity to experience Castell Meurig, a Norman-era motte-and-bailey castle quietly hidden within the surrounding landscape.
What appears today as a peaceful wooded mound was once a fortified stronghold overlooking the Towy Valley. Although the timber walls have long disappeared, the shape of the castle remains remarkably clear.
Guests often tell us that what they love most is the sense of connection to the landscape. A guided walk to the summit offers the chance to experience that atmosphere while discovering the history, wildlife and stories woven into this remarkable place.
