Leaving the peaceful surroundings of Black Mountain Escapes, the drive to Brynamman quickly becomes part of the experience.

The winding road across the Black Mountain reveals sweeping views over Bannau Brycheiniog, with open moorland, ancient woodland and rolling hills stretching into the distance. Every corner seems to offer another reason to slow down.

Then, something unexpected happened.

A small herd of the famous wild mountain ponies appeared quietly grazing beside the road. We stopped for a few minutes to watch them against the dramatic Welsh landscape before continuing on our way — one of those simple moments that ends up becoming the highlight of an evening.

It is moments like these that make this part of Wales so special. You are never far from nature, and sometimes the journey is every bit as memorable as the destination.

Stepping Back in Time at Brynamman Cinema

By the time we arrived at Brynamman Public Hall Cinema, it already felt as though we had discovered one of Wales’ best-kept secrets.

From the outside, the building has all the character of a treasured local landmark. Inside, it feels like stepping back to the golden age of cinema.

The beautiful auditorium, elegant details and plush red velvet seats immediately create an atmosphere that modern multiplexes simply cannot replicate. As we settled into our seats and watched the curtains slowly open, it felt like cinema the way it was always meant to be experienced.

Nearly a Century of Cinema

Brynamman Public Hall Cinema has been entertaining audiences since 1926 and remains one of the few traditional cinemas in Wales still preserving the customs that made going to the pictures feel like a proper occasion.

Originally built by the local mining community after the loss of the previous hall in 1915, it has served generations of families as a place for films, theatre, concerts and community events.

Today, its beautifully preserved features allow visitors to experience a little slice of Welsh history while enjoying the latest films in comfort.

For us, it was not simply about watching a movie. It felt like becoming part of a story that has been unfolding for almost a century.

The Best Kind of Interval

Then came one of the highlights of the evening.

The interval.

In an age of non-stop films and streaming at home, there is something wonderfully nostalgic about the lights coming up halfway through a movie.

As the curtains closed, people chatted quietly, stretched their legs and waited for one of Brynamman’s most cherished traditions: ice cream served during the interval.

Of course, we could not resist.

There is something incredibly charming about enjoying an ice cream while sitting in plush velvet seats inside a historic cinema. It is traditions like these that remind you cinema was once an occasion, not simply an evening out.

As we drove back through the peaceful Black Mountain beneath a sky full of stars, it struck us that this had not simply been a trip to the cinema.

It had been an evening of mountain views, unexpected wildlife, Welsh history and timeless traditions — the kind of experience that stays with you long after the credits roll.

From spotting wild mountain ponies roaming freely across the hills to enjoying interval ice cream in one of Wales’ most historic cinemas, every part of the evening felt wonderfully memorable.

Sometimes the best memories are not found miles away.

They are waiting just down the road, on a scenic drive through the mountains, ending in a place where time seems to stand still.
