Autumn in the Welsh Countryside
Crisp country walks, golden landscapes and cosy fireside evenings. Discover the simple pleasures of an autumn escape in rural Wales.

There is something rather special about autumn in the Welsh countryside.
The mornings arrive a little cooler. The light softens. Leaves turn from green to copper, gold and deep russet, and the first wisps of smoke begin curling from chimneys across the valley.
Here at Black Mountain Escapes, on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons), autumn feels less like the end of summer and more like an invitation.
An invitation to slow down.
To pull on your boots and walk straight from the door into the Carmarthenshire countryside. To come home with pink cheeks and muddy boots. To light the log burner while the afternoon fades outside and settle in for an evening with nowhere else you need to be.
If summer is about long days and making the most of every hour, autumn gives you permission to do rather less.
And we think it suits the countryside beautifully.
Crisp Autumn Walks from the Door
One of the loveliest things about staying at Black Mountain Escapes is that you don’t necessarily need to get in the car to begin exploring.
Step outside, pull on your walking boots and you’re already in the countryside.
Around Llangadog, quiet lanes, footpaths, fields and riverside landscapes offer wonderful opportunities for an autumn wander, with the Black Mountain rising dramatically beyond.
This is walking without an agenda.
You might set off intending to be gone for an hour and return considerably later.
There are hedgerows to investigate, views that demand you stop for a moment and that particular autumn light that somehow makes an ordinary field look extraordinary.
On clear days, the air has a wonderful crispness to it.
On less clear days — and this is Wales — there is something equally satisfying about wrapping up, heading out anyway and returning home slightly windswept and very ready for a cup of tea.
For those wanting something more adventurous, the surrounding Bannau Brycheiniog National Park offers miles of spectacular walking, from gentle valley routes to more challenging hikes across the Black Mountain.
Autumn is a beautiful time to explore it.
The Joy of Coming Home to a Log Burner
A good autumn walk is only improved by knowing what is waiting for you afterwards.
Back at your cottage, kick off your boots, make something hot to drink and light the log burner.
There is an almost immediate change of pace when a fire is burning.
You stop thinking about what you should be doing next.
Perhaps you open a bottle of wine.
Perhaps you cook something slowly.
Perhaps you sit down with a book you’ve been carrying around for six months and finally read more than three pages of it.
Or perhaps you simply watch the flames.
We are surprisingly enthusiastic advocates of doing absolutely nothing occasionally.
Outside, the temperature drops and darkness settles over the countryside.
Inside, the fire crackles.
There are worse ways to spend an evening.
Discover Autumn on the Black Mountain
The Black Mountain landscape changes beautifully with the seasons.
By autumn, the intense greens of summer begin giving way to warmer colours. Bracken turns bronze, woodland becomes golden and the lower afternoon sun throws long shadows across the hills.
It is a wonderful season for walking and photography, but also simply for driving slowly through the landscape and seeing where you end up.
Explore the roads around Llangadog and Llandovery, discover tiny villages, stop at a country pub or take a flask and find somewhere beautiful to sit for a while.
You don’t always need an itinerary here.
Sometimes following the road is enough.
Go Foraging
Autumn is one of nature’s most generous seasons.
Hedgerows and woodland become places of discovery, with blackberries, sloes, elderberries and other seasonal treasures appearing across the countryside.
Mushrooms also begin emerging when conditions are right, turning an ordinary woodland walk into something resembling a treasure hunt.
Foraging encourages you to look at the landscape differently.
Instead of simply walking through it, you begin noticing what is growing around you, what is in season and how the countryside changes from one week to the next.
If you’re unfamiliar with wild foods — particularly fungi — join an experienced local guide rather than identifying or eating anything yourself.
Even without collecting a thing, an autumn foraging walk is a lovely way to become more connected to the landscape.

Explore Castles Without the Summer Crowds
West Wales does castles rather well.
Autumn gives you the opportunity to explore them when the busiest summer period has passed and the surrounding landscape is beginning to change colour.
Nearby Carreg Cennen Castle is particularly spectacular.
Perched dramatically above the Carmarthenshire countryside, its ruins command extraordinary views across the surrounding farmland and hills.
Dinefwr, near Llandeilo, is another wonderful autumn destination, combining historic parkland, woodland walks and the atmospheric ruins of Dinefwr Castle.
Take your time.
Explore.
Then find somewhere good for lunch.
Which brings us to another important autumn activity.
Find a Country Pub and Stay for Lunch
There is a point during autumn when a salad stops feeling like lunch.
This is when Welsh pub season truly begins.
After a morning outside, find somewhere warm and settle in for proper comfort food — a Sunday roast, something slow-cooked, local produce and perhaps a pint or glass of red wine.
One of the pleasures of staying in rural Carmarthenshire is discovering independent pubs, cafés, farm shops and food producers along the way.
Rather than rushing from attraction to attraction, make lunch part of the day.
Order pudding.
You have been walking, after all.
Spend an Afternoon in Llandeilo
If the weather suggests that a mountain walk might be unnecessarily ambitious, head to nearby Llandeilo.
This colourful market town is perfect for a slower autumn afternoon, with independent shops, cafés, galleries and plenty of places to stop for coffee or lunch.
Browse antiques, discover local makers and take your time wandering.
Then return through the Tywi Valley as the afternoon light begins to disappear behind the hills.
Rainy days don’t have to be disappointing days in Wales.
Sometimes they are exactly what you need.
Watch the Stars from Your Hot Tub
One advantage of autumn’s earlier evenings is that you don’t have to wait until bedtime for the stars.
Away from the bright lights of towns and cities, the night sky over the Welsh countryside can be spectacular.
On a clear evening, wrap yourself in the warmth of your private hot tub or outdoor bath and look up.
No television.
No scrolling.
No need to photograph it.
Just warm water, cold air and a sky full of stars.
It is one of our favourite ways to end an autumn day.
Cook Something Slowly
Autumn food should not be hurried.
It is the season for soups, casseroles, roasted vegetables, pies and dishes that spend several hours quietly becoming more delicious while you do something else.
Pick up ingredients locally, return to your cottage and make dinner part of the experience.
There is something deeply satisfying about cooking while the weather does whatever it likes outside.
Especially when dinner is followed by another evening beside the log burner.
Enjoy the Weather — Whatever It Does
We could promise endless crisp blue skies.
But this is Wales.
Autumn might give you brilliant sunshine, dramatic clouds, mist curling around the hills and rain — occasionally all before lunch.
Bring layers.
Bring waterproofs.
Bring good boots.
And embrace it.
Some of the most beautiful days in the countryside are the atmospheric ones: low cloud clinging to the mountains, raindrops on the windows and fields disappearing into mist.
The weather isn’t interrupting the experience.
It is part of it.
A Different Kind of Autumn Break
Perhaps the greatest luxury of an autumn countryside escape is not having very much planned at all.
Wake naturally.
Make coffee.
Look outside.
Decide what sort of day it is.
Walk from the door if the hills are calling.
Explore Llandeilo if they’re hiding in cloud.
Find a pub.
Read beside the fire.
Cook dinner.
Watch the stars.
Sleep.
Repeat.
At Black Mountain Escapes, autumn is about enjoying the countryside at the pace the season seems to ask of us.
A little slower.
A little cosier.
And with considerably more time spent beside the fire.
So if you’re searching for a romantic autumn break in Wales, a cosy cottage in Carmarthenshire or simply somewhere beautiful to escape for a few days, come and experience autumn on the edge of the Black Mountain.
Bring your boots, your warmest jumper and a good book.
We’ll provide the countryside.
Ready to discover the Black Mountain?
Every stay begins with a slower pace of life.
