Late Summer to Autumn at Black Mountain Escapes

As August gently gives way to September, there’s a quiet shift here in the Welsh countryside. The landscape around Black Mountain Escapes in Llangadog begins to soften; the bright greens of summer mellow, the evenings become cooler, and the first hints of autumn appear across the fields and hedgerows.

For us, this is one of the most beautiful times of year. It’s a season of gentle preparation, where the pace slows, nature begins to change, and we start getting our cottages ready to welcome guests for cosy autumn escapes in the heart of the Brecon Beacons.

Blackberry Picking Along the Hedgerows

One of our favourite late summer traditions is heading out along the country lanes and footpaths surrounding Llangadog to gather wild blackberries.

The hedgerows are heavy with fruit, just waiting to be picked. There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about returning home with a basket full of freshly gathered berries, stained fingertips and plans for homemade puddings.

The countryside seems especially generous at this time of year, rewarding anyone willing to wander a little further along the lanes.

Homemade Blackberry Tart

After an afternoon spent blackberry picking, nothing feels more fitting than baking a traditional blackberry tart.

Ingredients

For the pastry

● 225g plain flour
● 110g cold butter, diced
● 2 tbsp icing sugar
● 1 egg yolk
● 2–3 tbsp cold water

For the filling

● 500g freshly picked blackberries
● 75g caster sugar
● 1 tbsp cornflour
● Juice of half a lemon
● A pinch of cinnamon (optional)

Method

1. Rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs.
2. Add the icing sugar, egg yolk and enough cold water to bring together into a smooth dough.
3. Chill for 30 minutes.
4. Roll out the pastry and line a tart tin.
5. Mix together the blackberries, sugar, cornflour and lemon juice before filling the pastry case.
6. Bake at 180°C (160°C fan) for around 35–40 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Served warm with Welsh cream or vanilla ice cream, it tastes of everything we love about this changing season.

Our daily dog walks become even more special at this time of year.

The afternoon heat no longer lingers quite so long, making longer walks across the hills and country lanes wonderfully refreshing. The grasses begin to turn golden, rosehips brighten the hedgerows, and the first leaves quietly begin their journey towards autumn colours.

It’s often during these walks that we notice the subtle changes first—the cooler breeze arriving earlier in the evening, the softer golden light across the fields and the unmistakable feeling that autumn is waiting just around the corner.

Preparing Black Mountain Escapes for Cosy Autumn Stays

While nature prepares for the changing seasons, we do the same here at Black Mountain Escapes.

As the evenings become cooler, it’s time to open the linen press and bring out the warmer Welsh wool blankets that have been carefully stored away during the summer months. Each blanket is aired and folded, ready to add an extra layer of comfort for guests settling in after a day exploring the Brecon Beacons.

The luxurious velvet bedspreads also make their return, replacing the lighter summer bedding and instantly transforming each bedroom into a warm and inviting retreat. There’s something incredibly satisfying about preparing the cottages for the cosy months ahead, knowing our guests will arrive to find everything ready for a relaxing countryside escape.

These small seasonal touches are all part of creating the welcoming atmosphere we love to share with everyone who stays with us.

Eirian’s Autumn Tradition

Outside, another familiar autumn ritual begins.

Eirian starts chopping and stacking logs, carefully building up our wood stores ready for the months ahead. There’s something timeless about the steady rhythm of splitting logs and the scent of freshly cut timber drifting across the garden.

Before long, neat stacks of seasoned wood are waiting beside each cottage, ready for guests to light the log burners after a day spent walking the Black Mountain, exploring the Brecon Beacons or simply enjoying the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Few things compare to returning from a crisp country walk, putting the kettle on and settling beside a crackling fire with a good book while the evening draws in outside.

A Gentle Time in the Garden

Late summer also signals a quieter season in the flower borders.

Spent perennials are cut back, seed heads are collected for next year and borders are gently tidied while leaving plenty for wildlife to enjoy. Bees continue to visit the last of the flowers, while birds begin feasting on seeds and berries as they prepare for the colder months ahead.

Gardening becomes less about keeping up and more about appreciating everything the season has given us.

The Magic of Early September Skies

The skies over Llangadog are especially beautiful in early September.

Morning mist often hangs in the valleys before lifting to reveal warm sunshine, while evenings bring spectacular sunsets painted in soft pinks, oranges and golds. As the nights slowly begin to draw in, stars become brighter once again, and there’s a peaceful stillness that only autumn seems to bring.

It’s one of our favourite times to sit outside with a cup of tea, listening to the sounds of the countryside slowly settling for the night.

Looking Forward to Autumn

Late summer isn’t really an ending—it feels more like a gentle pause before another beautiful season begins.

Here at Black Mountain Escapes, it’s a time of preparing our cottages with cosy blankets, velvet bedspreads and well-stocked log baskets, while outside the countryside quietly changes around us.
